Poverty Relief

China Charity Federation (CCF) helps poor families obtain the basic needs of life, such as food and water, shelter and clothing. The projects include “Charity Rainfall Storage,” providing drinkable water in the drought areas; “Smile Train,” helping children with cleft palate in indigent areas afford the surgery required; and “Sustainable Allowance,” giving subsidies to people whose standard of living falls below the minimum standard.

Clean Drinking Water Project
In 2007, CCF has continued the cooperative efforts with LDS Charity Association of the United States launching the Clean Drinking Water Project. Together, we have solved problems of water shortage and poor water quality in impoverished areas in five provinces including Ningxia, Gansu, Shanxi and others. A total of $265,447.00 has been invested and more than 35,083 people have benefited directly from this project.

People in many areas in China have difficulty obtaining clean drinking water, therefore, we plan to extend the scope of the Clean Drinking Water Project in order to meet the actual needs in poor areas more effectively. After inspections this year, we have chosen and prepared to launch 17 larger Clean Drinking Water Projects. The estimated investment budget is over $400,000.00, and the population who will benefit from these projects will be more than 70,000 people.

Children-Centered Regional Development Project
Since 1997, World Vision and the China Charity Federation have developed the "Children-Centered Regional Development Project". This project is a long-term project developed by World Vision, in cooperation with every administrative level of the Chinese government, aiming at improving children’s living conditions and making impoverished communities self-sufficient in future. World Vision reimburses regional development projects for their work with the children in order to assure stable financial resources at the local level.  They also encourage donors and recipient children to establish relationships. In this way, the children participating in these regional projects are able to go to school, receive vaccinations, improve their nutritional level and have other basic requirements met. The communities get financial assistance to develop their local economy, and to improve their environment, medical services and community infrastructure, etc. The most important objective is to upgrade the abilities of community leaders through training and participation.

By the end of September, 2002, World Vision has helped 33,779 children.  World Vision has developed 25 regional development projects, mostly distributed in remote impoverished mountain areas in Northwestern and Southwestern China, including 21 counties in Gansu, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Jiangxi, Linxia, Xinjiang, and Yunnan Provinces. These areas are often more vulnerable to natural disasters, serious soil erosion, traffic problems, lack of resources and infrastructure. Most of the residents are minorities, such as the Yi, Hui and Uygur, Hani, Dongxiang, and Zhuang.

Rainwater Saving Project
The Rainwater Saving Project was launched by CCF in 1995 and has been continued and expanded. The objectives of this project are to raise funds to help the arid regions in Gansu Province with the construction of rainwater collecting facilities.

Donations of $100.00 to $150.00 can be used to build a 100 square-meter rainwater harvesting surface and a 30-50 cubic-meter water kiln. In this way, the perennial problem of drinking water for people and livestock of a family of three to five members may be solved. Since being launched in Gansu province in 1995, the project has built about 26,000 water kilns and solved the drinking problem for 120,000 people and their livestock.
